Star Wood

You'll find Star Wood tucked into the Gloucestershire countryside just outside Cheltenham, and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander without demanding much planning. The forest itself is straightforward - mixed woodland with decent walking paths that don't require hiking boots or an OS map, though it helps to know where you're going. Beech and oak dominate, and depending on the season you'll get bluebells in spring or that earthy autumn carpet underfoot.

It works best for families wanting a gentle forest walk rather than anything dramatic. Young kids won't find it thrilling - there's no playground equipment or designated features - but if they're old enough to enjoy spotting wildlife and mucking about in the undergrowth, they'll be content for an hour or so. Dog walkers absolutely get the most from it; the paths are sensible and there's space to let them roam a bit.

Historically it's nothing to write home about, so if you're after ancient monuments or heritage sites, this won't scratch that itch. But that's also why it feels relatively quiet compared to honeypot spots. You can actually hear the birds.

Timing-wise, spring and early autumn are the real wins - summer can feel muggy under the canopy, and winter's just muddy unless there's been proper frost. Free to access, no facilities to speak of, so bring water and decent shoes. If you're based at Bourton-on-the-Water Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby, it's absolutely worth a morning outing before heading into Cheltenham proper.
