Station Wood

The woodland track into Station Wood doesn't announce itself with much fanfare - you'll find it tucked away near Cockermouth, a proper working forest that feels more like someone's back garden than a tourist attraction. The trees tower overhead, beech and oak mostly, with the kind of dense canopy that keeps everything cool even on warm days. It's the sort of place where you notice things: the light cutting through gaps in the leaves, a stream working its way downhill, the occasional flash of a woodland bird.

Walkers will get the most out of this. There's nothing staged about it, no visitor centre or marked loops - just decent paths winding through genuine woodland where you can actually breathe without bumping into a coach party. Kids won't get bored if they're the type who like turning over logs and looking for things; younger children might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes. The walk itself is manageable, nothing steep or technical, though it does get muddy in wet weather - so proper boots are worth the bother.

There's no entrance fee that we can find, no set hours either, which means you can show up when you fancy without worrying about gates closing. Allow an hour for a decent potter through. If you're staying at North Lakes Country Park, just three miles away, this makes a cracking morning walk to burn off energy before heading back for lunch. It's not dramatic or famous, but that's rather the point - it's just a good wood to walk in.
