Staward Peel

A squat stone tower rises from the Northumberland moorland near Hexham, looking less like a castle and more like something that's refused to fall down for seven centuries. Staward Peel is a 14th-century fortified house - proper defensive architecture from a time when raiders from Scotland made solid walls non-negotiable. You can walk right up to it and peer through the narrow windows. The exterior tells you everything: thick stone, minimal ornamentation, positioned for practicality rather than show.

Historically minded visitors will find it genuinely interesting - a working example of Border country defences, not a postcard-pretty ruin. But if you're after turrets and grand halls, this will disappoint. It's a short stop rather than a half-day attraction: twenty minutes to have a good look around the outside, maybe another ten if you're taking photographs from different angles.

The moorland setting is the real draw. Walking out here from Hexham area, you get the sense of why defensible towers existed at all - isolation and exposure work both ways. If you're camping at Langley Dam Glamping or Hadrian's Wall Campsite and exploring the wider region, factor this in as part of a longer walk rather than a dedicated destination. Free to visit, no facilities on site, and best approached on a decent weather day when the light catches the stone properly. Winter rain would have you heading back to base quickly.
