The Steam Fayre and vintage vehicle rally near Taunton was exactly the sort of thing you'd plan a caravan weekend around - all those lovingly restored tractors, steam engines, and old lorries gathering in one field. It's the kind of event that appeals to families wanting something beyond the usual park entertainment, and to the sort of people who can spend three hours chatting about a 1950s Fordson tractor's engine. The atmosphere was always proper lively, with steam whistles, the smell of fuel and grass, and vendors selling pies and local cider.

What made it work was the accessibility. You could wander about at your own pace, let the kids climb on some of the static vehicles, and soak up the old-timers' stories about the machinery they'd brought along. Most rallies like this run for a full day, so you'd want to budget a good four to five hours if you were going to do it properly.

That's a shame, because if you're staying at Cornish Farm Touring Park or Ashe Farm, just three or six miles away respectively, it would have been a cracking way to spend a morning during a Somerset holiday. Worth checking locally in Taunton if there are similar events filling the gap, but don't rely on finding this one on the calendar.
