Stinking Stone

The name alone is enough to make you curious - Stinking Stone really does live up to its billing. This limestone outcrop sits on the moors above Keighley, and when conditions are damp, it genuinely releases a sulphurous whiff that'll catch you off guard. It's not unpleasant exactly, just properly distinctive.

The walk up is the whole point here. You're tackling open moorland terrain with decent views across the Pennine landscape - nothing earth-shattering, but solid Yorkshire fell country. The stone itself is modest, which some might find disappointing after hearing the name, but it's the sort of place serious walkers build into a longer circuit rather than a standalone destination.

Walkers and fell runners make the pilgrimage most often. If you're camping nearby at Tip Top or Woodsworth Exploring, it's a cracking way to fill a morning before heading to Bronte Country Park or pushing further into the Pennines. Expect 90 minutes to two hours depending on your pace and where you start from.

There's no visitor infrastructure - no café, no car park, no opening hours. Just land and access. The real appeal is being out on the moors with something genuinely odd to investigate. Kids who like strange natural phenomena and a bit of a scramble will get a kick out of it. Those after a genteel walk with a summit view might find it a bit thin. The wind can be relentless up here, so dress accordingly.
