Stiperstones National Nature Reserve

Jagged quartzite tors rise from purple heather moorland like ancient dragon's teeth, creating one of England's most dramatic landscapes. The Stiperstones ridge runs for miles across south Shropshire, its rocky outcrops visible from the A488 long before you reach the reserve itself. These aren't your typical rolling English hills - this is proper wild country that feels more Scottish Highlands than West Midlands.

Walking the ridge path takes about two hours and rewards you with views stretching to Wales on clear days. The going can be tough underfoot, especially around Devil's Chair, the highest and most famous tor. Local legend claims the devil himself sits here during storms, which seems entirely plausible when mist swirls around the rocks.

Families with older children will love the adventure feel, though pushchairs are a non-starter on these rough paths. The reserve attracts serious hikers and photographers in equal measure - that golden hour light on the tors is genuinely special. Access is free from several car parks dotted along the minor roads south of Shrewsbury.

For a holiday base, the area offers plenty of camping options within a short drive. Bow House Country Park and Spring Lea Holiday Park both put you within striking distance, making the Stiperstones an easy day trip that'll leave you properly tired and satisfied.
