Stirling Old Bridge

The bridge itself is the thing - a proper medieval structure that's carried people across the River Forth since 1501. Standing on it now, you're looking at something that's genuinely shaped Scottish history. William Wallace would have crossed here. So would Bonnie Prince Charlie, though not in triumph. The stonework is solid, unadorned, functional in that medieval way that somehow looks more honest than modern engineering.

What you get is a relatively short walk - maybe twenty minutes across and back - but the views are decent, especially looking north towards the Abbey and the castle perched up on the hill. The Forth winds below, and if the light's right, it's the kind of spot that makes you understand why Stirling mattered so much militarily. Control this bridge, control the Lowlands.

It's free, and it works well as part of a morning pottering round central Stirling rather than a destination in itself. Families with kids will manage it fine; walkers heading between the castle and the old town naturally funnel through here. History types will find it genuinely rewarding - this isn't a reconstructed tourist piece, it's the actual thing.

Witches Craig Caravan & Camping Park sits two miles south, which makes it a convenient base. The bridge connects nicely with a broader Stirling walking route if you've got a couple of hours. Don't expect crowds or facilities - it's just a bridge, but a good one.
