Stocking Grove

The woodland around Stocking Grove is proper old-growth forest - ancient trees, mossy ground, the whole thing feels untouched in the way English woodland does when you've wandered far enough from the car park. It's east of Stevenage, so close enough for a day trip but far enough to feel like proper countryside.

You're walking through beech and oak mostly, with enough space between the trees that you don't feel hemmed in. The paths are well-trodden but not rammed with people even on weekends. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear birds rather than just see them. Families with younger kids get a genuine kick out of spotting wildlife and the forest floor is ideal for collecting acorns and leaves without any sense of danger.

Honestly, it's not a destination in itself - you won't spend more than two hours here unless you're photographing fungi or doing some serious woodland studies. But if you're staying at Church Farm Ardeley or Almshoe Glamping nearby, it's absolutely worth a morning walk. There's something restorative about being under proper tree cover, away from the open parkland feeling.

No facilities that I saw, so bring water and dress for mud. Best in autumn when the light filters through differently, or spring when the undergrowth comes alive. Go midweek if you can - weekends see a few more dog walkers, which is fine, but the peace is genuinely the point here.
