Stockton Wood and Down

A quiet stretch of chalk downland just outside Salisbury, Stockton Wood and Down offers the kind of walk that doesn't announce itself with fancy signage or a visitor centre. You'll find beech woodland giving way to open grassland, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - rarer than you'd imagine near a market town.

The terrain isn't demanding. Paths meander through the woodland and across the downs, with decent views across the Wiltshire landscape if you pick the right spot. It's the sort of place walkers come for a proper stretch without needing to be back for lunch, though it works just as well for a shorter amble. Families with reasonably capable legs will get on fine; under-fives might find it a slog.

An hour or ninety minutes depending on how thorough you want to be. Worth the drive from Salisbury town centre, though only if you're genuinely up for a walk rather than expecting a destination experience.
