Stone Circle

You'll find yourself standing in a field near Stoke-on-Trent, surrounded by weathered stones arranged in a circle that's been here for thousands of years. It's a proper Bronze Age site, and while it won't take your breath away like Stonehenge, there's something genuinely moving about the quietness of it. The stones aren't massive - they're more modest, scattered across rough ground - but that's partly what makes it work. You're not jostling with crowds; you're actually alone with it.

Historically-minded visitors will appreciate the authenticity. There's no visitor centre, no shop, no railings. Just the stones, the sky, and the sense that people stood exactly where you're standing four thousand years ago. If your kids are the type who prefer genuine exploration over theme-park archaeology, they'll rate this. Toddlers and the easily bored? Less so.

Allow 30 to 45 minutes, though you can pass through in ten if you're in a hurry. It's free, obviously. The best time is early morning or late afternoon when the light hits properly and you've got the place to yourself.

If you're based at Luzlow Caravan Site or Glamping at Holly Grove Farm - both within three miles - this fits nicely into a morning walk. Stone Wall Farm CL is even closer at under four miles. It's the sort of stop that breaks up a day without demanding much time, but gives you something real to think about.
