Stoney Littleton Long Barrow

You're looking at a Neolithic burial chamber that's been standing for roughly 5,500 years, just south of Bath near Wellow. Stoney Littleton is one of Somerset's finest examples - a long barrow with a proper stone passageway you can actually walk through, which feels fairly mad when you consider the age. The entrance stones are impressive, and inside you get the sense of something genuinely ancient rather than just another tourist tick-box.

It's a short walk from the road, maybe five minutes across fields, so don't expect a major hike. The barrow itself takes perhaps twenty minutes to explore properly, including scrambling about inside the passage tomb. History types will find this absolutely gripping - the construction technique, the layout, the sheer determination of Neolithic people dragging stones about. Families with younger kids might find it a touch underwhelming unless they're into archaeology; there's no café, no visitor centre, just a field and some very old rocks.

Free to visit, and the site's open year-round, though wet weather makes the approach muddy. Early morning or late afternoon beats midday for avoiding the Bath day-trippers. The views across the Wellow valley aren't dramatic, but they're pleasant enough on a clear day.
