Stonyhill Wood

Stonyhill Wood sits just east of Billericay, a proper Essex woodland where you can actually lose yourself without needing to drive halfway across the country. It's the sort of place locals know about but most visitors miss - which is rather the point. The trees are dense enough to feel genuinely remote, even though the car park isn't far away, and the paths wind through a mix of broadleaf woodland that changes character depending on the season. Spring brings bluebells in decent numbers. Autumn, if you time it right, is genuinely atmospheric.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a stroll-and-back-in-twenty-minutes situation - you can easily spend two hours here if you explore properly, and the terrain is uneven enough to keep things interesting without being punishing. The woodland canopy means it's also one of the few places you can escape the worst of a grey Essex summer afternoon. Kids won't get bored if they're the type who like climbing over logs and finding things, but there's no playground or obvious attraction beyond the trees themselves.

If you're staying at Barleylands Campsite nearby, this makes an excellent walk without needing to pack up and head elsewhere. The woodland is free to access and doesn't require booking - just turn up and go. There's limited car parking, so avoid weekends if you can. Early morning is the sweet spot: quieter, better light filtering through, and you'll likely spot more wildlife.
