About Stranog Hill
The summit rewards you with genuine 360-degree views. On a clear day you can see right across the valley, and the heather moorland around the base is genuinely lovely in late summer. Allow a couple of hours for a leisurely walk if you're starting from the village - it's not strenuous, more of a steady plod. Bring a windproof though; exposure gets you here.
This works perfectly as a morning or afternoon outing if you're based at Deeside Holiday Park - only 2.7 miles away - or Stonehaven's Queen Elizabeth Park if you want something with proper facilities. Neither park is more than a ten-minute drive, so it's easy to slot in between other activities. Families with younger kids might find it a bit tame after half an hour on the summit, but keen walkers or anyone after a proper Scottish hill experience without the scrambling will get real value from it. The moorland walking is the real draw here rather than any facilities at the top.
Go in autumn when the light's best and the midges have died off.
