Stroud Coppice

Walk into Stroud Coppice and you're stepping into proper old-growth woodland - the kind of place where the canopy gets so thick it's still damp underfoot even hours after rain. This is ancient forest on the Isle of Wight, near Freshwater, with gnarled oak and sweet chestnut trees that have been here for centuries. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no fancy infrastructure. You just turn up and walk.

It's brilliant for anyone who wants a proper woodland ramble without the crowds. Walkers will appreciate the network of paths threading through the trees - some boggy, some firm, all genuinely peaceful. Families with kids who enjoy exploring will find plenty to do, though don't expect marked trails or playground gear; this is about discovery. The coppice character means you'll see signs of traditional woodland management - coppiced stools, varied tree ages, dense understorey. It's the sort of place where birdwatchers and naturalists get genuinely excited.

Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're the meandering type. Free to access - just park carefully nearby and head in. Early morning is when it's quietest, though the light through the canopy in late afternoon is lovely.

Camp at Glamping The Wight Way or Heathfield Farm Camping Park, both within spitting distance, and you've got a proper woodland base. Combine it with coastal walks around Freshwater and you've got a solid few days sorted. This isn't Instagram material - it's the antidote to that.
