Stubbing Moor Plantation

The woodland at Stubbing Moor isn't going to set your heart racing, but it's a solid walk if you're based around Leeds and fancy getting out from the city without driving for hours. The plantation feels properly managed - rows of conifers mixed with older deciduous trees create a dense green tunnel that's rather pleasant on a damp Yorkshire afternoon.

This is walker territory, mainly. The paths are clear enough, though muddy after rain, and you can easily spend an hour or two wandering through without seeing another soul. It's not dramatic scenery - no fell views or dramatic vistas - but that's rather the point. Come here to breathe properly and hear birdsong, not for Instagram moments.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're the type who enjoy pointing out mushrooms and sticks. Older children who like a proper ramble will get more from it. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could find, so come equipped - bring water, wear boots you don't mind getting wet.

The real appeal is proximity to Leeds and Wighill Park Glamping just down the road. If you're staying there and want a morning forest walk without committing to a full day's hiking, Stubbing Moor fits the bill nicely. Free to access and genuinely quiet, which counts for something when you're trying to escape the city. Just don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip.
