Summersvere Wood

Walk into Summersvere Wood and you're immediately wrapped in proper old-growth woodland - the kind where sunlight filters through layers of canopy and the ground squelches underfoot even weeks after rain. It's ancient forest on the edge of Crawley, which makes it feel far more remote than it has any right to be given the proximity to town.

The wood works best for serious walkers rather than casual strollers. There are decent paths threading through, but you'll want proper boots and a decent map - it's easy enough to lose your bearings among the trees. Families with older kids will enjoy the maze-like quality of it all; younger ones might find it a touch gloomy and samey after the first twenty minutes. Birdwatchers and anyone interested in native woodland ecology will spend hours here.

Allow two to three hours minimum if you want to explore properly rather than just tick a box. There's no visitor centre, cafe, or facilities as far as I can tell, so bring water and don't rely on your phone signal working.

If you're based at Worth Forest Glamping or Hook Farm Campsite, Summersvere makes a solid half-day excursion. It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of effort - the deeper you venture, the quieter it gets. Not Instagram-famous, not crowded, just genuine woodland that feels like it belongs more to the forest than to the tourists.
