Surrendell Wood

Surrendell Wood isn't one of those famous beauty spots you'll find plastered across Instagram. It's a proper working forest near Chippenham - mixed woodland with a genuine sense of quiet that's increasingly rare. You get decent walking trails threading through the trees, though don't expect manicured paths or signage at every turn. The forest floor is carpeted with bracken in summer, and in autumn the whole place shifts into shades of amber and rust that make the walk genuinely worth your time.

This is ideal for walkers who like a bit of solitude rather than crowds. Families with young children might find it a touch underwhelming unless the kids are keen on spotting wildlife or climbing fallen logs - it's not geared towards the playground brigade. History enthusiasts could do worse; the woodland sits within Wiltshire's broader patchwork of rural heritage, though Surrendell itself isn't particularly ancient compared to nearby attractions.

Allow a couple of hours for a leisurely ramble. There's no entry fee that we can find, and no facilities on-site, so come prepared. It works well as a morning walk if you're staying at Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park just four miles away - close enough for a quick trip but removed enough to feel like proper countryside. Combine it with Malmesbury's market town charm afterwards, only five miles further on. Visit in spring or early autumn when the light is brilliant and you're not wading through mud or midges.
