Swaffham Heath

Swaffham Heath is a proper slice of Norfolk's open landscape, a stretch of heathland that rolls out east of the market town of Swaffham with big skies and acres of gorse and grassland. It's the sort of place that rewards a walk rather than a quick stop - you get genuine solitude here, which feels rare these days. The heath itself is unremarkable on paper, but on the ground it's oddly compelling, especially early morning when mist clings to the ground or in late summer when the heather blooms purple across the ridges.

Walkers will find this their natural habitat. There are paths crisscrossing the heath, none particularly demanding, and the open terrain means you can strike your own route without worrying too much about getting properly lost. Birdwatchers do well here - you'll spot skylarks, curlew if you're lucky, and the occasional kestrel quartering the rough ground. Families with older kids won't complain about a couple of hours rambling about, though younger children might find the flat expanses a bit dull without a specific destination in mind.

The nearest proper base is Swaffham itself, about fifteen minutes' drive away. If you're staying at Norfolk Woods Resort & Spa just down the road, Swaffham Heath makes for an easy morning outing before returning for lunch. Breckland Meadows is slightly closer and equally convenient. The heath is free to access and open year-round, though it's driest and most walkable May through September. Go for the solitude and the genuine Norfolk character, not for drama or facilities.
