Swaffham Heritage

The museum occupies the old Cockley Cley Iceni Village site just outside Swaffham, which immediately tells you something about Norfolk's archaeological significance. Inside, you'll find objects and displays that chart the town's evolution from Anglo-Saxon settlement through to its Georgian heyday - pottery, coins, domestic artifacts, the sort of stuff that actually brings a place into focus rather than just reading about it.

It's not enormous, so you won't need more than ninety minutes, though if you're the type to read every label and linger over finds, you could stretch it to two hours. The displays lean heavily toward local history - which is entirely the point - so this works best if you've got a genuine interest in how market towns functioned and developed. Families with young children might find it a bit quiet for extended visits, but school-age kids doing a project on Norfolk or Roman Britain will find it worthwhile.

The real benefit is combining this with a stay at Breckland Meadows, just under a mile away, which gives you a proper base for exploring the wider area. If you're after something bigger and more resort-like, Norfolk Woods Resort & Spa, five miles out, has better facilities and a higher rating, though that's further from town itself.

Admission details and opening hours are best checked online before visiting - phone ahead if you're making a special trip. Swaffham itself has decent pubs and cafés, so you can structure a half-day around the museum without it feeling rushed.
