Swanage Railway - Swanage Station

The platform at Swanage Station has that wonderful smell of steam and hot metal - you'll know it the moment you arrive. This is a working heritage railway that runs vintage trains along the Dorset coast, with the main station right in the heart of Swanage town centre. You can either ride the trains themselves (which travel towards Corfe Castle and back) or simply explore the station, watch the locomotives being prepared, and soak up the railway nostalgia without paying for a journey.

It's genuinely absorbing for train enthusiasts and children who aren't quite old enough for a full day out yet. The volunteer-run operation means there's usually someone willing to chat about the stock and history. Allow 30 minutes to an hour if you're just pottering about the platforms; much longer if you're taking a ride. The best time is midweek when it's less rammed, though weekends do have more frequent departures.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - Swanage Bay View is practically on the doorstep - makes this an easy addition to a coastal holiday. It works well as a half-day activity to break up the beach time. The railway connects you to Corfe Castle station inland, which opens up the ruins and surrounding countryside if you fancy venturing further. Not groundbreaking, but proper atmospheric and a solid way to spend a couple of hours if you've got a soft spot for vintage railways.
