Swanton Morley Waterfalls

The River Wensum cuts through Norfolk woodland near Bylaugh with enough vigour to create something you don't expect in this corner of England - proper waterfalls. Swanton Morley Waterfalls aren't dramatic Lakeland-style plunges, but they're genuine enough: a series of cascades where the river tumbles over chalk bedrock, creating small pools and a genuinely pleasant walk through mixed forest.

It's the kind of spot that rewards a proper ramble rather than a quick photo stop. The woodland around here is lovely - lots of alder and willow - and you'll likely have the place to yourself outside weekends. Count on an hour or so if you're taking your time, picking a good vantage point, maybe having a sit-down. Families with young kids should manage fine if they're comfortable with uneven ground and tree roots underfoot; it's not strenuous but does need proper footwear.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, which is honestly part of its charm. Free access as far as I can tell. If you're staying at Bylaugh Country Park Caravan and Campsite - just under a mile away - this makes an excellent morning or late-afternoon excursion. It's short enough not to derail your day but proper enough to feel like you've actually got out and explored. Worth the detour if you're in Norfolk looking for something beyond the obvious, though manage expectations: this is Norfolk, not the Scottish Highlands.
