Swaynes Howes (burial chambers)

Two Neolithic burial chambers sit quietly on the Gower Peninsula, dating back around 5,000 years. These ancient stone structures - essentially what remains of communal tombs - are easily missed if you're not looking for them, tucked away on moorland near Rhossili.

The chambers themselves aren't spectacular. You'll find weathered capstones balanced on upright slabs, creating small cave-like spaces where our ancestors laid their dead. History enthusiasts will appreciate the significance, but kids might wonder what all the fuss is about after five minutes.

Getting there requires a proper walk across uneven ground from the nearest parking spot. Wear decent boots - the terrain can be boggy, and there are no proper paths. The site is always open and free, though there's precious little interpretation to help you understand what you're seeing.

Archaeology buffs visiting Gower will find this a worthy detour, especially combined with the more famous Arthur's Stone nearby. Families staying at Hillend Camping Park or Pitton Cross might struggle to sell this to restless children, though the walk itself offers lovely views across the peninsula.

Truth be told, unless you're properly keen on prehistoric sites, the spectacular coastal scenery around Rhossili Bay will likely prove more rewarding. But if you do make the effort, you're standing where people gathered in ceremony millennia before Stonehenge was built.
