Swifts Hill

The walk up Swifts Hill is one of those proper Cotswold climbs that doesn't look steep on the map but leaves your calves burning. It's a modest peak by any measure, but the views back across Stroud and the valley beyond make the effort worthwhile. On a clear day you can pick out the town's industrial architecture below - all those old mills clustered where the valleys meet - and the rolling countryside stretching towards Wales.

You're looking at about an hour round trip from Stroud town centre, maybe a bit longer if you're dawdling to take photos. It's the sort of walk that works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Middle Lypiatt and Painswick are both close enough that you could knock this out before breakfast and still have the rest of the day free. The terrain is straightforward: proper woodland in places, open hillside in others, nothing technical.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this. History buffs might find the industrial heritage angle interesting given Stroud's weaving past, though there's not much interpretation on the hill itself. Kids will find it manageable without complaining too much, provided they're used to a bit of a climb. The view justifies the effort, but I'd not make a trip here solely for Swifts Hill - pair it with a wander round Stroud itself or one of the better-known peaks in the surrounding area. It's a solid addition to a Cotswolds walking holiday, not the headline act.
