Swift's Hill Nature Reserve

Swift's Hill is a proper woodland walk on the outskirts of Stroud - nothing fancy, just a decent stretch of mixed forest with some decent views across the Gloucestershire valleys if you time it right. The reserve itself is small, maybe forty minutes of steady walking if you're not dawdling, though you can easily extend it by looping back through nearby paths.

It's the sort of place that rewards a visit in late spring or early autumn when the light filters through properly and you might actually spot something worth photographing. Summer weekends get a bit busy with families, which is fine - there's space - but go midweek if you want it quieter. The paths are marked well enough, though they can get muddy after rain, so decent boots matter.

Birders will have a field day here, especially if swifts are around (hence the name). Walkers heading for a gentle morning stroll before breakfast will find it convenient. Kids might get restless if you're dragging them round for the full circuit, but younger ones tend to enjoy spotting things and climbing the gentler slopes.

Stay at Middle Lypiatt Glamping or Tobacconist Farm Campsite - both are highly rated and within striking distance - and make Swift's Hill part of a broader walking day around the Stroud valleys. Combine it with a proper lunch in town afterwards. Entry is free, which takes the sting out of a slightly underwhelming morning if the weather lets you down.
