Sycamore Wood

Walk into Sycamore Wood and the noise of Braintree drops away almost immediately. It's a proper Essex woodland - nothing dramatic, but genuinely peaceful once you're in among the trees. The paths are well-trodden and easy to navigate, threading through a mix of sycamores (obviously) and older deciduous growth that creates proper dappled shade even on bright days.

You won't find viewpoints or facilities here - this is working woodland, not a visitor attraction dressed up. Families with young kids will get a solid hour out of it, maybe ninety minutes if they're the type to hunt for logs and inspect every tree. Walkers appreciate it as a genuine break from the Essex flatlands, a chance to feel like you've properly left somewhere, even if Braintree's edge is only a few minutes' drive away.

The wood works well as a morning or late-afternoon addition to a longer holiday. Hill Farm campsite sits just 6.2 miles south - it's a cracking spot, highly rated - making Sycamore Wood an easy detour for campers wanting a woodland walk without the crowds. Arrival is straightforward from the A120, and there's roadside parking nearby. No café, no gift shop, no entrance fee. Go early in the day if you want it quiet, or after school runs if you're hoping to avoid families with pushchairs.

It's not a destination in itself, but it's the sort of place that reminds you why you left the towns behind.
