Tŷ-uchaf-ffordd

Stone walls emerge from bracken and gorse on this windswept hillside above Llanberis, marking what remains of a medieval farmstead that once thrived in Snowdonia's shadow. Tŷ-uchaf-ffordd translates roughly as 'the house on the upper road', and you can still trace the old track that brought pack horses and traders through these uplands centuries ago.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to ponder among the tumbled foundations and field boundaries that speak of a time when this harsh landscape supported entire communities. The site isn't signposted or managed - it's simply there, slowly returning to the mountain. Walkers exploring the paths between Llanberis and the Snowdon foothills often stumble across it by chance.

Families might struggle to hold young children's attention here unless they're already keen on ruins and old stones. The terrain is rough underfoot and there's nothing by way of interpretation boards or facilities. Allow half an hour to explore properly, though serious archaeology buffs could spend longer trying to work out the building layout.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Llanberis - Snowdon View or the touring park are closest - this makes a decent short detour for anyone walking the area. Just don't expect Caerphilly Castle. It's atmospheric rather than spectacular, best suited to those who enjoy piecing together fragments of the past.
