Tagg Wood

The trees here are proper tall, which is the first thing that hits you when you walk into Tagg Wood. It's a working forest just outside Bury, all conifers and that slightly green-filtered light that makes you feel like you're underground even though you're not. There's a network of paths threading through - nothing too technical, mostly flat and straightforward. You could get lost if you weren't paying attention, but the paths are worn enough that wandering off isn't really a concern.

It's the kind of place that rewards a long walk more than a quick visit. An hour minimum, though walkers with proper legs can easily spend two or three hours in here without seeing the same section twice. The canopy closes in enough that it stays cool even on warm days, which is brilliant if you're trying to escape the heat. Kids will find it interesting for a bit - the density of trees is genuinely impressive - but there's no playground or facilities, so don't expect them to self-entertain all afternoon.

Bring decent footwear; the forest floor can be boggy in patches, especially after rain. It's free to access, which is worth knowing. The forest has an industrial feel to it - you'll occasionally spot evidence of timber management - but that's just how working forests are.
