Talgrwn-Mawr

Talgrwn-Mawr sits on the border between Conwy and Denbighshire, a proper little climb that rewards you with views across the North Wales coast and inland to the Snowdonia massif. It's not a household name - you won't find tour coaches queuing at the base - which is precisely why it's worth the trek from Abergele.

The walk itself takes about an hour each way depending on your pace and which route you pick. The summit sits around 600 metres up, so it's steep enough to feel like a proper exertion but not so brutal that you need specialist kit. On a clear day - and North Wales has plenty of them if you're patient - you can see right across to Anglesey and the peaks beyond. Cloudy days render it rather pointless, so check the weather forecast before setting off.

Walkers will get the most from this one. Families with younger kids might find the ascent a slog, though determined teenagers will manage fine. History buffs won't find much to investigate up there - it's all about the walk and the view. The surrounding moorland is fairly exposed, so bring layers and wind protection.

Combine it with a walk around Abergele itself, which has a decent beach and a few shops worth poking around. Worth the effort if you love ridge walks and don't mind earning your views.
