The Peel

The Peel sits on a low mound just outside Conwy, overlooking the coastal flats towards Abergele. It's the earthwork remains of a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress - basically a raised stronghold with defensive ditches, built in the 12th century when the Normans were stamping their authority all over North Wales.

There's not much standing now, which is honest. You get the shape of the thing - the artificial mound, the surrounding banks - and it's genuinely interesting if you like reading the landscape. Walkers will appreciate the short detour from town. History types will find themselves mentally reconstructing what stood here eight hundred years ago. Kids might lose interest after fifteen minutes unless you're good at storytelling.

It's free and accessible year-round, though there's no visitor infrastructure. Allow twenty minutes to poke around properly. The views aren't dramatic, but they give you a sense of why the Normans chose this spot - control of the approaches to Conwy.

If you're staying at one of the parks nearby - Ty Mawr or Golden Gate are closest at a mile and a half - it's an easy morning stop before hitting the beach or exploring Conwy town centre. Don't make a special journey unless you're already in the area. It works best as part of a broader walk or historical trail rather than a destination in itself.
