Tarbert Castle Community Woodland

You'd be forgiven for expecting something grander when you hear 'castle', but what you get at Tarbert is something far more rewarding - a proper woodland walk with genuine history woven through the trees. The castle itself is basically a ruin now, perched on a peninsula jutting into Loch Fyne, but that's almost beside the point. The community woodland surrounding it is what makes the trip worthwhile.

The walking trails here are gentle enough for families with younger kids, though the path down to the water's edge can get a bit muddy after rain. Allow a solid hour if you want to explore properly, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type who stops to read every interpretive board. The views across the loch are genuinely lovely, especially on a clear afternoon when you can see right down towards Inveraray.

It's the kind of place that works brilliantly as a half-day detour rather than a full-day destination. If you're staying at The Gather or Tarbert Holiday Park - both just a short drive away - this fits perfectly into a broader exploration of the area. Come in spring when the woodland floor explodes with bluebells, or autumn when the light cuts through the trees at the right angle. Summer's fine too, though you'll share the trails with rather more people than you'd perhaps like. The free access and accessible parking make it an obvious add-on to any Argyll break.
