Tarvin Sands Reindeer Centre & Fishery

The reindeer here are the real draw - proper curious creatures that'll come right up to you if you've got food in hand. It's a working fishery too, so you get the odd surreal moment of watching someone cast a line while a reindeer wanders past. Located just outside Tarporley in Cheshire, it's the sort of place that works brilliantly for families who want something low-key and hands-on rather than a full day out.

You can feed and interact with the reindeer, which keeps children entertained for a good hour or so - though I'll be honest, if your kids aren't into animals, they'll probably lose interest faster than that. The fishing side means there's a decent lake on site, so it appeals to anglers too. Staff are generally friendly and know their animals well.

Stay at one of the nearby caravan parks - Northwood Caravan Park is just over a mile away, or Lloyds Meadow Glamping if you fancy something with a bit more comfort. Delamere Forest Camping and Caravanning Club Site is within striking distance if you want to base yourself somewhere with more woodland walks on offer.

I'd recommend ringing ahead to check opening hours and admission prices before you drive out - details are sketchy online. Go on a weekday morning if you can; weekends bring families en masse. It's worth a visit if you're staying in the area, but probably not worth a special trip from miles away unless you're genuinely keen on reindeer.
