Teesdale Way - High Coniscliffe - Public Footpath

The Teesdale Way at High Coniscliffe is a proper walk, not a quick stroll. This public footpath follows the River Tees as it cuts through North Yorkshire, and the views along here justify the effort. You're looking at the water far below, steep banks either side, and on a clear day the landscape opens up in ways that make you forget you're only a short drive from Shildon.

It's walkers' territory, really. The path can be muddy and the inclines aren't gentle, so you'll want decent boots and at least two hours to do this justice. Kids who are into nature will get something out of it - there's wildlife about, and the river has proper character - but younger ones might struggle with the terrain. History buffs will appreciate that this valley has industrial heritage woven through it, though it's nature that dominates now.

Free to access, as footpaths are, and there's no timetable stopping you going early or late. Spring and autumn tend to be best - summer can feel muggy down in the valley, and winter turns the mud into something properly slippery.

If you're staying at Hewn Yorkshire, just down the road near Shildon, this is an excellent day out that justifies the walk to get here. It's not a quick add-on to a park holiday, but if you're basing yourselves in the area and like proper hiking, it's well worth the trip.
