Telford Morton

The earthworks at Telford Morton are what's left of a medieval settlement - think grass-covered lumps and bumps rather than standing stones. You won't find much in the way of signage or interpretation, which means you either show up with some local history knowledge or you're squinting at the ground wondering what you're looking at. For archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers, though, it's genuinely interesting. The site sits just outside Hitchin, making it a reasonable leg-stretcher if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Jacks Hill or Baldock Park Homes.

What actually draws most people here is the walk itself rather than dramatic ruins. The surrounding countryside is proper lovely, and you get a real sense of how landscapes change when you're standing where people lived centuries ago. Kids will probably lose interest after twenty minutes unless they're the type who get excited about digging in soil and imagining Anglo-Saxon life. Families with younger children might be better off heading to one of the larger parks in the area first.

No facilities to speak of - it's free and unguarded, so turn up whenever suits you. Allow an hour if you're combining it with a countryside ramble, less if you're just passing through. The real value comes if you're already exploring rural Hertfordshire or camping at Radwell Lake or Henlow Bridge Lakes and fancy something low-key and genuinely local. Don't expect tourist infrastructure. Do expect some genuine quiet.
