Temperlands Coppice

The woodland around Temperlands Coppice, just outside Bridport, is one of those places that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick stop-off. Ancient oaks and beeches create a proper canopy overhead, and the paths meander through dense undergrowth that feels worlds away from the nearby coastal resorts. It's free to explore and you can spend anything from thirty minutes to a couple of hours depending on how far you fancy walking.

This isn't a manicured attraction with visitor centres or marked trails - it's genuine Dorset woodland. Dog walkers get the most out of it, frankly, and so do anyone with a genuine interest in native British forest ecology. Families with older children will have a decent time, though younger kids might find it a bit samey after a while. Bring proper footwear; the ground gets boggy in winter and muddy year-round.

If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Newlands or Seadown are practically on the doorstep - it's worth a morning or afternoon ramble before heading into Bridport for lunch. The coppice connects reasonably well to other woodland walks in the area, so you can string together a longer route if you're keen. Spring is genuinely lovely when the bluebells come through, though autumn colour is decent too. Summer can be a bit muggy under all that green.
