National Trust - Coney's Castle

You won't find much left standing at Coney's Castle, but what remains of this Iron Age hill fort commands the landscape west of Bridport like it means business. The National Trust maintains the site, and it's one of those places where the earthworks tell the story better than any placard could - a series of defensive ditches and ramparts that still look impressively formidable even after two thousand years.

The walk up is genuinely rewarding. You get sweeping views across West Bay and the Jurassic Coast, and on a clear day you can see why ancient settlers chose this spot. It's a proper vantage point. The fort itself covers several acres, so allow a good hour if you're keen on poking around and reading the landscape. Kids enjoy clambering over the banks, though younger ones might tire on the climb back down.

It's free to visit and open year-round - no gates to unlock, no admission booth. Spring and early summer are best, when the surrounding grassland comes alive. Winter works too if you don't mind it being a bit bleak and windswept.
