Ten Acre Gill

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured forest trail, Ten Acre Gill sits just north of Hassocks and delivers exactly what its name promises - ten acres of dense trees, streams, and the kind of undergrowth that makes you feel properly away from it all. The gill itself (that's the stream cutting through) is the main draw, with paths that weave between oak and beech, crossing footbridges when the water gets serious. It's wet underfoot most of the year, so wellies aren't optional in winter - this isn't a spot for pristine trainers.

Walkers and families with older kids will get the most from it. There's something satisfying about the place that photographs never quite capture - the way the canopy closes in, how quiet it gets once you're a few hundred metres in. You won't find benches or interpretation boards; it's the real woodland, not a manicured nature experience. Budget an hour for a decent ramble, though keen types could comfortably stretch it to ninety minutes if they're not in a hurry.

Free to access and open whenever, which is the way these things should be. It works well alongside a stay at nearby Wild Boar Wood Campsite (about five miles away), giving you proper forest time that feels genuinely separate from the Sussex landscape most visitors expect. Not the showiest walk in the south, but absolutely worth the trip if you want the woods without the crowds.
