Ten Acre Wood

You'll find yourself walking beneath a proper cathedral of oak and beech just inland from Porthcawl. Ten Acre Wood is exactly what it says on the tin - a genuine forest patch in Bridgend County Borough where you can actually lose the sound of traffic for twenty minutes if you're lucky.

The paths wind through dense woodland with that satisfying carpet of last year's leaves underfoot. There's nothing manicured about it. Fallen logs make natural seats, sunlight filters through at odd angles, and you'll spot the usual woodland residents if you're quiet - birds mostly, the odd rabbit bolting away at your approach. It's the sort of place that feels genuinely wild despite being just a few miles from the coast.

Walkers will get the most from this. Not challenging terrain by any stretch, but solid enough for proper boots and a decent breather. Kids can run about without too much risk, though you'll need to keep an eye on younger ones near any water. Allow an hour to do it justice without rushing.

The whole thing works brilliantly as a morning detour before heading to Trecco Bay Holiday Park down the road. You're only talking twenty minutes from Porthcawl itself, so it slots neatly between breakfast and the beach. It's free, naturally, and there's no formal opening hours - just a wood you can walk through when you fancy some green space.
