Tennyson Monument

Standing tall on the western tip of the Isle of Wight, this Gothic Revival monument commands spectacular views across the Solent. Built in 1897 to honour Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who lived nearby at Farringford House, the 35-foot cross cuts an impressive figure against the clifftop skyline.

Walkers and poetry enthusiasts will get the most from the visit. The monument sits at the end of Tennyson Down, accessible via a lovely coastal path from either Freshwater Bay or Alum Bay. It's a proper hike though - about two miles each way from Freshwater, with some steep sections that might test less energetic visitors.

Families should consider carefully before setting out. While older children who enjoy walking will love the adventure and views, pushchairs are definitely out of the question. The exposed clifftop can be windy too, so wrap up even on mild days.

From your base at nearby holiday parks like The Bay Colwell in Totland Bay or Tapnell Farm, this makes an excellent half-day expedition. Allow three hours for the round trip from Freshwater, including time to admire the views and read the inscribed verses from 'Crossing the Bar'. The monument itself is free to visit and always accessible, making it well worth the effort for those stunning Isle of Wight panoramas.
