The Admiral Blake Museum

A modest red-brick building in the heart of Bridgwater houses one of Somerset's more overlooked naval stories. The Admiral Blake Museum celebrates Robert Blake, the 17th-century naval commander who changed everything about how England fought at sea - and the locals here aren't shy about telling you why he matters.

Inside, you'll find the sort of museum that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-off. Model ships, period artifacts, and documents trace Blake's rise from Bridgwater merchant's son to Lord Protector's fleet admiral. The exhibition work is straightforward, nothing flashy, but it gives you a genuine sense of the man and his era. History buffs will spend a solid hour here; families with restless kids might manage forty minutes before they're eyeing the exit.

Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, and it's free admission - which makes it a no-brainer if you're already in Bridgwater. The building itself, overlooking Blake's Gardens, is worth a look from the street regardless.

If you're camping at one of the parks within five miles - The Hideout, Mill Farm, or Wall Eden Farm - this slots in nicely as a wet-weather option or a cultural breather between outdoor activities. Bridgwater itself has the River Parrett and some decent walks if you want to pair the museum with a proper day out. Don't expect crowds. That's rather the point.
