The Alpacas of Cottingham

You'll find yourself standing at a fence in the Leicestershire countryside watching what might be the most ridiculously charming herd of alpacas you've ever encountered. These woolly creatures have taken over a patch of farmland near Market Harborough, and honestly, they're worth the detour if you're in the area.

The alpacas themselves are the main event. They'll come right up to the fence, curious and surprisingly sociable, with their permanently quizzical expressions. Children absolutely lose their minds here - the novelty of being stared down by a camel-like creature never gets old. Adults find it oddly meditative, watching them graze and occasionally spit (though they're far less aggressive than their reputation suggests).

There's no formal infrastructure that I could find, no gift shop or café, which is rather refreshing. It's just you, the animals, and the fields. Free to look at from the roadside, so you can spend ten minutes or linger for half an hour without commitment. Bring treats if they're available - alpacas have solid opinions about food.

It's not a full afternoon activity, but it's the sort of quirky thing that breaks up a park holiday nicely. The Leicester area has plenty of walking routes and proper attractions, so slot this in as a curiosity rather than a centrepiece. Early morning or late afternoon is best - fewer other visitors, and the light's kinder for photos.
