The Apuldram Dog Field

There's a patch of land near Chichester where Roman pottery has been turning up for decades. The Apuldram Dog Field is exactly what it sounds - a working field that happens to sit above layers of archaeological interest going back nearly two thousand years. It's not a manicured heritage site with information boards and a gift shop. You'll find field, some earthworks, and if you're lucky, evidence of the Roman settlement that once thrived here.

The appeal is honestly quite niche. If you're into Romano-British history or archaeology, it's worth a visit - you can see where artefacts have been recovered and get a sense of the landscape these people inhabited. Casual visitors might find themselves asking "is that it?" after twenty minutes. There's no formal visitor infrastructure, which means you need a bit of local knowledge or a good map app to find it and understand what you're looking at.

It works best as an add-on rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at West Sands Holidays or elsewhere around Chichester, and you've got an interest in Roman Britain or archaeology, it's worth the short drive. The surrounding countryside is pleasant for a walk, and Chichester itself has proper Roman history worth exploring - the city walls, the cathedral, and the town's museum all give you better context for what happened at Apuldram.

Go in the afternoon on a clear day if you can. Spring and autumn are best - you'll avoid the worst of the mud and the summer crowds aren't really an issue here anyway.
