The Box

Plymouth's cultural renaissance landed squarely on the Barbican when The Box opened in 2020, and it's genuinely worth carving out a morning for. This isn't your stuffy provincial museum - it's a proper modern gallery space where art, natural history, and local stories collide across three floors without feeling either contrived or overwhelming.

You'll find yourself wandering through galleries dedicated to Plymouth's maritime past - Drake and the Spanish Armada get their due, but there's real depth to the social history on display. Contemporary art exhibitions rotate regularly, which keeps it fresh for repeat visits. The natural history collection won't blow your mind if you've been to bigger institutions, but it's well-curated and the interactive elements mean kids won't spiral into boredom after the first room.

The top floor has genuinely lovely views back across the Barbican and out towards the Hoe. It's an excellent spot to pause with a coffee and plan the rest of your day in Plymouth. Budget two to three hours if you're thorough, less if you're just dipping in. Free admission makes it an easy win on a rainy afternoon - and trust me, you'll get plenty of those in Devon.

If you're staying at Dartmoor Domes a few miles north, The Box makes for a good half-day venture into Plymouth proper. The Barbican itself is worth wandering once you've had your fill of the galleries; the Tudor and Jacobean buildings scattered around are genuinely excellent.
