The Cascade Way

A short walk from Warminster takes you to the Cascade Way, a modest but genuinely pleasant waterside route that follows the River Wylye as it tumbles through a narrow valley. It's the sort of place locals know about and visitors somehow miss - no crowds, no entrance fees, just proper countryside on your doorstep.

The path itself winds alongside cascading water features that give the walk its name. On a sunny day, especially after heavy rain when the river's running high, it's lovely. The walk suits families with school-age kids and anyone after a straightforward couple of hours rambling without needing a map or special kit. It's not dramatic terrain - you won't need fell boots - but the riverside setting beats a car park walk hands down.

Allow an hour or so there and back depending on how far you fancy going. There's no charge and no facilities to speak of, so bring water. Best visited when the water's flowing well, which means late autumn through spring really shows it off.

The main Longleat estate dominates the area, so this walk offers a quieter alternative if you want a break from the crowds. Nothing fancy, but it does the job.
