The caves

The caves near Arbroath are the sort of place that makes you feel properly small. We're talking about geological features carved into red sandstone cliffs - dramatic stuff that's been shaped by water and time rather than human hand. The walk down to them is steep and a bit muddy depending on weather, but the payoff is genuine: you get to explore actual caves, duck through low entrances, and stand where the sea's been doing its work for millennia.

It's not a theme park experience. There's no lighting, no interpretation boards spelling everything out. You bring a torch, you pick your way carefully, and you work out the geology yourself. History types will appreciate that people have sheltered here for thousands of years - there's real substance to the place. Families with older kids who don't mind getting a bit grubby will have a cracking time; younger ones might find it claustrophobic or lose interest quickly.

Allow a good hour if you're being thorough, longer if you're taking photographs. Timing matters - you'll want to check tide times before you go, as the caves aren't accessible at high water. The nearest town is Arbroath, which has decent facilities and a working harbour if you want to make a day of it.

If you're staying at The Grange Glamping just a few miles away, this makes a solid half-day outing. Bring proper footwear and a headtorch. It's not Instagram-friendly in the traditional sense, but it's the real thing.
