The chalet

The Chalet sits on the edge of Ross-on-Wye, a curious Victorian-era structure that's been a local landmark for well over a century. It's a proper oddity - a stone building that looks like someone decided to plonk a Swiss chalet right into the Gloucestershire countryside and call it done. The views from up here across the Wye Valley are genuinely excellent, which explains why it became a tourist stop in the first place.

What you actually do there is largely just look around and take photos. There's not much in the way of facilities or interpretation, so don't expect a visitor centre experience. It works best as a gentle walk destination rather than a destination in itself - you'll want to factor in a good hour to reach it, enjoy the views, and head back down. The path isn't too demanding, though it does climb a bit. On a clear day you can see for miles. On a misty one, frankly, you might wonder why you bothered.

This suits walkers and hikers far more than families with small children. If you're camping at Doward Park or Bracelands - both within striking distance - it's a logical half-day excursion. The structure itself is worth a photograph but won't hold your attention for long. Go for the views and the walk, not for the building. It's exactly the sort of local landmark that rewards a detour if you're already in the area, but probably isn't worth planning your trip around.
