The Common

The Common sits high above Powys, a proper upland plateau that rewards walkers with something Mid Wales does brilliantly - wide-open space and genuine solitude. It's moorland rather than mountain, the sort of place where you can walk for hours without seeing another soul, just heather, grass, and the occasional sheep.

What you get here is straightforward: access to open country with decent footpaths crisscrossing the plateau. There are no facilities on the Common itself, no cafes or visitor centres, which is partly the charm. Bring a map or a decent phone signal and pick your line. The views stretch far across the Welsh borders, and on a clear day you can see properly far.

Walkers will find this worth the trip. Families with energetic kids aged ten and up will do well here too. Those after a gentle stroll might find the initial climb a bit much. There's no entrance fee - it's open access land - and you can spend anywhere from ninety minutes to a full day depending on how far you fancy ranging.

No queues, no postcards, just the Powys hills doing what they do best. Come in late spring or early autumn when the light is honest and the midges are elsewhere.
