The Copse

The Copse near Brough is one of those woodland patches that sneaks up on you - easy to miss on a map, but genuinely worth a detour if you're walking in East Yorkshire. It's proper forest, the kind where you actually lose the sky for a bit, which feels rare enough in this part of the world. Ancient-looking trees, decent paths threading through, and the kind of quiet you don't get near roads.

Walkers will get the most from it. Bring proper shoes because the ground stays damp even days after rain, and you'll want an hour at minimum to do the woodland justice without rushing. There's something restorative about it - not dramatic or Instagram-ready, just genuinely peaceful. Families with restless kids might find half an hour enough, though older children who actually like being outside will appreciate the space.

If you're staying at William's Den, which sits just five miles away, The Copse makes for a cracking morning walk before heading back for lunch. The holiday park's a decent base for exploring the quieter side of East Yorkshire, and having proper woodland nearby lifts it considerably. No fancy facilities at The Copse itself - it's just nature doing its job - but that's rather the point. Free access, no daft charges, no roping off bits. Just go when the weather's decent and the paths aren't waterlogged.
