The Courts Garden

Just outside Trowbridge sits a Victorian garden that feels properly removed from the real world. The Courts Garden is a National Trust property where you wander through a series of outdoor rooms, each one designed with obsessive care - topiary, herbaceous borders, water features that actually work rather than looking like they were installed yesterday.

You get the sense walking here that someone genuinely loved gardening rather than just inherited money and hired people to do it. The layout works because it doesn't try too hard; there's a kitchen garden that's functional rather than Instagram-ready, and the whole thing sits in a valley so you're sheltered from wind. Spring and early summer are the obvious choices, though autumn light through the mature trees is honestly rather special.

It's not enormous. Most people see everything in ninety minutes, two hours max if you stop to actually sit on a bench. Families with young kids might find it a bit quiet - there's no playground energy here, and kids need a reason to care about specimen plants. But anyone serious about gardens, or just wanting a proper wander with decent views of the Avon Valley, will think it's worth the drive into Wiltshire.

If you're camped at Marsh Farm or Yellowtail (both within a mile), this becomes an obvious morning or afternoon activity. Combine it with Trowbridge's town centre if the weather turns nasty, though frankly that's not the draw.
