The Donkey Sanctuary

You'll find a working sanctuary just outside Plymouth where around 400 donkeys live out their days in proper peace. Some arrived after years of neglect, others were simply unwanted - this place gives them actual retirement.

Walking the grounds you see them properly, not behind bars or performing tricks. There's something genuinely moving about watching a rescued donkey just be a donkey again, grazing in Devon sunshine. The sanctuary takes its conservation work seriously too, running breeding programmes for endangered breeds and education programmes that don't feel patronising.

It's free to visit, which is generous, though donations keep the operation running. You'll want at least two hours to wander without feeling rushed - longer if you're the type who stops to chat with visitors about their animals. Kids generally find it engaging enough, though it's not a theme park. Older children and adults who actually care about animal welfare tend to get more from it.

For a proper break in the area, Hidden Hill's luxury glamping sits just 3.5 miles away - the hot tubs won't hurt after a morning wandering the sanctuary grounds. The surrounding Devon countryside is strong on walking, so you could easily combine this with other outdoor pursuits.

Go mid-week if you can. Weekends draw crowds, and donkeys - like most of us - appreciate a bit of quiet.
