The Drang Gallery

The Drang Gallery sits just outside St Ives, a proper working art space where you can actually watch artists in their studios rather than just gawp at finished pieces behind glass. It's the kind of place that rewards wandering - you'll find contemporary work across painting, sculpture, and ceramics, with the sort of selection that changes enough to make repeat visits worthwhile.

The real draw here is the immediacy of it. You're not shuffling through some sterile white cube; you're in actual studios where makers are getting on with their work. The space feels lived-in, which some might find refreshingly authentic and others might find a bit rough around the edges. Either way, it's genuine.

Free entry is a massive bonus. Allow an hour if you're just browsing, longer if you get chatting with anyone working there - they tend to be generous with their time. It's particularly good for anyone who actually cares about process and craft rather than just ticking off cultural attractions. Kids will either love it or get bored within ten minutes, depending entirely on the child.

If you're camped at Polmanter or one of the other parks within a couple of miles, this is a perfect morning or late-afternoon slot before heading into St Ives proper for lunch. The walk from most of them is manageable. Go midweek if possible - weekends can bring the crowds from town.
